Army Captain Bilbrey was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmond D. Bilbrey Sr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born June 1, 1943 and killed in action on March 11, 1971 in Laos. He attended New Mexico Military Institute from 1962 to 1964.
Captain Bilbrey had been married to Karen Hoffman for 10 months at the time of his death. They had no children. His religious preference was Methodist.
Bilbrey was a single pilot of a helicopter on a rescue mission. He was shot down with no chance of survival.
